Green Event

Sustainability is becoming more and more important in all industries. Nowadays, if a start-up cannot present an elaborated sustainability strategy, the prospect of success on the international or national market is probably rather low. This illustrates the importance of anchoring sustainability in companies. Above all, it is also important to meet the increasing consumer demand for sustainable products and services. But if you only want to meet customer demand, you quickly reach the issue of “greenwashing”. In this case, the actual goals of making a service or product more sustainable are watered down and merely used as an excuse to generate sales. Nowadays, this can be observed in many ways, even with big brands. And the following also applies to events: Simply setting up lots of plants and distributing natural materials as decorative elements does not make a green event.

Sustainable events

Especially in the event industry, it is important to focus on sustainability. Less for the sake of demand, much more because it accounts for a large share of annual CO2 emissions. In 2017, according to the “Meeting & EventBarometer 2017/2018”, approximately 405 million people took part in around 2.97 million events. This illustrates not only the German growth market of events, but also the immense environmental impact caused by the participants’ travel to and from the event, waste production and water and energy consumption. However, this does not mean that event agencies and organisers of (large) events should bury their heads in the sand and boycott events altogether. On the contrary: the exchange, the atmosphere, the experience – all these things can also be implemented sustainably and, especially in this day and age, online. We have summarised for you here what we look for in order to make a green event truly sustainable.

Sustainability

Planning sustainable events requires not only competence in the event industry but also know-how in the field of sustainability. As a Hamburg event agency, we have both and are always aware of the prevailing problem of greenwashing.

What does planning and implementing an environmentally conscious and sustainable event mean to us?

We often work with regional sustainable partners for our green events in order to be able to implement our concepts ecologically and cost-efficiently. Furthermore, we do not only consider the event on site but also the transport routes and organisational structures. These should also be environmentally conscious and as climate-friendly as possible. We try to keep transport routes short and point out alternatives for travelling to and from the event. Avoiding waste and plastic is also a big item in our planning of Green Events. The 2012 Olympic Games were a pioneer in this respect, which also resulted in a separate DIN standard. Doing without paper tickets is no longer a problem these days. Almost everyone has a smartphone and many organisers are already using this uncomplicated solution. In terms of plastic and waste avoidance, there are also almost unlimited possibilities and alternatives nowadays. We also incorporate these into our concept. The catering and the decoration also represent the smaller hurdles of the event.

Last but not least, the most important thing is that you should be as honest about sustainability as we are. Don’t do it for sales or customer demand, but for more sustainability on our planet.
