What is a team event?

What is a team event?

What actually is an event? What types are there? Which event is suitable for my wishes and ideas? We want to get to the bottom of all these questions in our blog series. In our last blog post, we already dealt with what constitutes a kick-off event. At this point we want to dive deeper and take a closer look at the individual types of events. Today we are talking about team events.

First, let’s clarify the question: What is a team event?

Team events are among the incentive measures used in the HR market to motivate employees and improve morale. These can be inspiring and motivating events that promote team bonding and focus on the joy of working together. Therefore, the different skills from the team can also be introduced in the form of different activities, whereby the participants complement each other and develop team spirit. From brains to dexterity – this is how the team can prove its strength.

Nevertheless, the team event differs from team training in one decisive point: here, the focus is less on work and reflection and more on getting to know each other, integrating new members and having fun. Due to their nature, such events are not only suitable for restructuring or putting together new teams, but also for an initial “stocktaking”, on the basis of which further teambuilding measures can follow.

Effect of team events

Well-rehearsed and well-functioning teams are the basis for success in most companies. This has an effect on the individual employees: They are more motivated, enjoy coming to work, are performance-oriented and see themselves as a valuable part of a whole. In short, there is a strong “we-feeling” in the team. This feeling should be intensified by the team events and maintained as long and sustainably as possible.

This includes, among other things, the ability to communicate – it is one of the components of a functioning team and a successful company. Team events can help the participants to develop an appropriate way of communicating within the team and thus also strengthen communication skills.

But team events are also perfect for integrating new members. The aim is to create a basis of trust and to promote getting to know each other.

However, fun should always be in the foreground. That is why team events are created that move and inspire and remain in the minds of the participants for a long time.

Reasons for team events

There are many reasons to organise a team event. Is your team a successful one that works well? If not, this is the ideal opportunity to change it today. But even if yes, team events provide the opportunity to bring all leaders and team members around the table and promote exchange. Conversations away from the daily work routine are stimulated and getting to know each other is taken to a new level. Simply going out to eat together has long since ceased to be up-to-date – team events offer more possibilities and are also fun.

For this reason, team events make sense for every company and are always an effective measure for team development. However, the support of teamwork is regularly neglected. As a rule, no team works by itself. Teamwork must be actively promoted to prevent misunderstandings and to ensure that projects run smoothly. So, if teams are given the right tools for successful cooperation, they become a powerful unit of the company.

Goals of team events

The objectives of a specific team event depend on the status of the team and the type of project or company. However, the following points, among others, can be seen as general goals of team events:

  • New team members should be introduced and integrated
  • To shorten the getting-to-know-you phase
  • The team members get to know each other from a different perspective
  • The “we-feeling” should be promoted
  • The team should experience its potential
  • The cooperation within the team should be strengthened
  • Mutual support should be encouraged
  • The team should develop its creativity
  • The performance of the members should be strengthened
  • The fun is in the foreground and a common experience is to be created

Advantages of a team event

The advantages of team events are numerous. As an employer, for example, you benefit from higher productivity when your employees are satisfied. Because this also increases the satisfaction of your clientele. As a rule, managers are responsible for ensuring that their employees are satisfied. For this reason, you as the boss should not be afraid to be part of the team event – after all, you are an essential part of the team.

Another advantage of team events is the increased employee loyalty. This is an important part of the corporate culture. If it were to disappear, the company would incur high costs in the form of training new employees and familiarising them with the company.

Further training can also be organised as team events and also ensure a stronger bond between the employees and the company. This shows that you value your employees and want to keep them in the company. These measures open up new perspectives for employees and the daily work routine can be broken through the introduction of new knowledge.

Above all, team events promote teamwork. Due to the change in work culture from individual subdivisions to cross-departmental project teams, functioning teamwork is essential for the company. However, this requires special thinking and behavioural structures that cannot be taken for granted in every employee. Team events help to establish these.

Better communication is also one of the advantages of team events. It is not without reason that the ability to communicate is considered one of the most important elements in human relationships and cooperation, but at the same time it is also seen as the greatest weakness in these relationships. Over the course of time, the ability to communicate has developed into a complex system – language. It enables us to exchange ideas. But in many cases, this is difficult. Team events can help to support this.

Places for a team event

Team events are not tied to a specific location. You can have them held near your company or you can choose a suitable location away from your usual surroundings. If you have already tried archery or darts and want to offer your employees something special, these options might be suggestions for you: Escape Game, scavenger hunt, sailing or canoeing tour, rally, e-bike tour, sports festivals and much more are possible.
